Fruit fly trap is a biological trap directly aimed at fruit flies, (Drosophila malenogaster) also called banana flies and vinegar flies.

This practical fruit fly trap attracts the small insects with a non-toxic lure. The idea is that the insects are lured into the trap through the funnel system, from which they cannot come up again. The fruit flies navigate with their sense of smell and, like the common fly, can only tell the difference between light and dark. Therefore, it is impossible for the fruit fly to find out about the trap again. The fruit fly trap is set up in restaurants, canteens, kitchens, waste rooms and near empty packaging, where the small fruit flies are annoying. When the trap is full of dead insects, or after 6 – 8 weeks, it can be disposed of with the daily waste collection. The large trap simply needs to be emptied and cleaned with cold water, then it is ready for a new filling of bait. The trap must be placed so that it is not exposed to direct sunlight and high heat.

Fruit fly trap Proff is suitable for industrial kitchens, rooms with empty packaging of wine, beer and soft drinks and for waste rooms. The trap can be reused, and refills can be purchased for this.

Biology

The adult flies are often attracted from afar by fermenting fruit or vegetables. In a household, they often come to bottles with loads of wine, beer, milk or ketchup, to jam and to vinegar, and here the female lays her whitish eggs. They are so small that they are difficult to detect with the naked eye. A banana fly can lay approx. 25 eggs per day and up to 2,000 during its lifetime. After a day, the small larvae emerge from the eggs and search for food. They become fully grown in 4-5 days and then pupate. In the pupa, the transformation into an adult fly takes place over a further 3-4 days. The flies start laying eggs when they are 24 hours old, so under favorable conditions they complete their entire development in less than 10 days. Indoors, they can breed all year round.
