Horse brakes
Horseflies are a type of fly that is a parasite on horses. They are approx. 1.5 cm long and has a black head and grayish body. Horse brakes are active in the summer months and can be a nuisance to horses.
Horse mites lay their eggs on the horse's legs. When the eggs hatch, the larva crawls into the horse's mouth and down into its stomach. The larvae live in the stomach for approx. two months, during which they feed on the horse's food. When the larva is an adult, it crawls out of the horse's mouth and lays its own eggs.
Horse brakes can cause a number of problems for horses. They can cause irritation and discomfort, and they can also spread diseases. Horse brakes can be a cause of anaplasmosis, babesiosis and other diseases.
There are a number of things that can be done to prevent horse brakes. Horses can be treated with insecticides, and horse paddocks can be kept free of horse brakes by removing weeds and other hiding places.

- Offer the horse a dry and shady place to rest.
- Check the horse regularly for eggs or larvae of horse-brakes.
