Wood-destroying insects and fungi damage wood and the wooden floor. The adult insects lay eggs on the surface of the wood or in cracks. From the egg comes a small larva, which gnaws its way into the tree.

The larva develops and leaves behind it burrows which are filled with excrement called mealybugs. When the larva is fully developed, it places itself close to the surface of the tree and pupates. Out of the pupa comes a new adult insect that gnaws a hole and flies out of the flight hole. It is these holes that are seen on the infested wood.
